This is a story about a boy and a giant. Beyond even Jack & The Beanstalk, this may be the ultimate story of weak vs. strong, little vs. big, and it has been the inspiration for countless stories, motivational speeches, sermons, as well as plays, movies, cartoons and one of my favorite songs.
This is Biblical canon. It is told in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 17) which is in both the Jewish and Christian holy word. The short version is that two armies were going to fight. Goliath was a giant warrior from Philistine and David was a shepherd boy from the Kingdom of Israel. When the Philistines brought forward Goliath to fight in single combat, this scared the armies of Israel and no one wanted to fight him. They were certain that given his size and strength they would be destroyed and Israel would become subject to Philistine because of them. Enter the shepherd boy, armed with “only a sling and some rocks” to fight this giant. So David turns his sling, hurls a rock at Goliath and with one rock he drops the giant. It’s a miracle!!!
To the scared Israelite soldiers, to Saul (the King of Israel), to the Philistine army, and to many who have read this story it is the story of a miracle, which it most certainly is but very few have the context to understand what the real miracle was. God put together the perfect situation for His favor to be demonstrated in David’s life. He went from the outhouse to the penthouse in one custom-designed demonstration of his particular skills, his enemy’s particular weaknesses, and God’s favor (particular to David). Don’t be fooled into thinking the miracle was the rock…the whole story is miraculous and available to all of us. For more on this, take a look at this TED talk from Malcolm Gladwell.
