Crew Member – Jon Kitna: Finding the Lost and Keeping It R.E.A.L.

Any of you that follow NFL football are probably familiar with Jon Kitna.  He was quarterback in the NFL for 16 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys.  He had multiple 4,000+ yard seasons.  Ultimately he retired from the NFL in January, 2012.  For most people you could assume that would mean the end of them doing anything of public interest with their lives…then again Jon Kitna is not most people.

While he was in college, Jon received his teaching degree from Central Washington University.  Since his retirement, he has gone back to his hometown and his old high school and become a teacher and football coach.  THIS is where the story gets interesting…Jon teaches Algebra at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington.  He is a first-year (yes, a rookie) teacher in an urban school.  On top of that, he is the new head football coach for a program that was struggling.  So what’s a guy to do, teach some classes and start on making this year’s football team successful, right?  Well, so what if I told you that he suspended starting players on his team for offenses the school wouldn’t/couldn’t have punished those players for?  And what if I told you they lost pivotal games because of those decisions and yet he did it again.  And what if I told you that this rookie teacher specifically requested to teach the worst students in the school?

If you’re like many on this crew you would probably start by saying, “Dayum!”  I know I did.  Then you would keep reading.  He turned disruptive and failing students into productive and positive students.  He is putting a culture change on a flailing high school football program and creating R.E.A.L. young men.

Rejects passivity
Empathizes with others
Accepts responsibility
Leads courageously

Any person with millions in the bank who takes it upon him/herself to do that for others is an honored crew member on this vessel.  I hope you will take the time to read more about Jon and his latest developments.

UPDATE: As if you didn’t see this coming, Kitna’s football team has a record of 7 wins and 1 loss for the season.  These R.E.A.L. men are seeing real results.
